Leitrim Cycling Festival Programme 2022

Celebrating bicycles, community and County Leitrim! 

All events will take place at Lough Allen Adventure Centre, unless otherwise stated.

Camp set up and check-in from 2pm on Friday

Friday 20th May 2022 

FRIDAY EVENING 

5pm – Pretty Your Bike Workshop 

DrumshanboTidy Towns  will provide colorful spoke tassels & wired flower decorations to pretty up your bike for the opening festivities – a launch lap of the town at 7pm. 

6pm – Launch Feast 

Feast on the delicious dishes lovingly prepared by Nathan’s Kitchen and his merry volunteers. Suggested donation €5 pp 

7pm – Launch Lap of the ‘bo 

Artist and inventor Paddy Bloomer and his collection of unusual bikes will lead the colourful parade through the town. Dress up yourself and your bike to join in the festival fun!  

8pm – Film Screening – Love Song to a Bicycle 

The latest film from Leitrim film director Johnny Gogan and artist Laura McMorrow

Saturday 21st May 2022 

SATURDAY MORNING 

10am – Spin class with Tojo 

Get your day off to a good start and warm up for the days activities 

10am – 12pm – Songs and Puppets with Everything Eileen O’Toole 

Eileen will spend the morning with you, writing and recording personalized songs about you and your bicycle as well as giving Hand Puppet Articulation classes, Here she’ll teach your hand to be a better puppet while teaching your puppet to be a better cyclist. All ages are welcome.

10.30am – Introduction to Wim Hof method with Edwin Gray 

Tap into your inner power to become happier, healthier and stronger with a guided breathing session and ice bath.

12pm – Off-Road cycle to Boardwalk for… 

12.30pm – Family Picnic by the ‘Snake on the Lake’ 

Grab your sandwiches and a flask of tea for a festival favourite 

SATURDAY AFTERNOON 

2pm – Balance Bikes 

A chance for our littlest festival goers to try out two wheels. 

2pm – Cycling Poetry Workshop 

Get your creative juices flowing with Wayne Frankham.

Poetry workshop open to all comers, featuring a reading of several distinctly varied poems, plus local & cycle prompts for all to have a play with poetry 

2.30pm – Film Screening – Love Song to a Bicycle  

Another chance to catch this lovely film by Johnny Gogan and artist Laura McMorrow

3pm – Field of wildflowers and bicycles workshop 

Art workshop for all ages with Grainne McMenamin.

toddlers to grown-ups. The great thing is that it never fails, because even the splotches and mistakes we make along the way are transformed into something useful, beautiful and life affirming.”

3.30pm – Cyclimpics 

Learn the basics, improve your skills and take part in the Bike Olympic challenges! Follow the leader, ring of fire, weaving through obstacles and more! 

4pm – Annual Slow Bicycle Race 

The event of the weekend. The rules are simple but the challenge is anything but. 

5pm – Cycling inspired poetry 

A reading from Gerry Boland and others. Gerry will be reading from his collection of cycling inspired poetry especially commissioned by Leitrim Cycling Festival 🙂

5.15pm – The Old Ghost Road 

A cycle tourers dream in New Zealand with Fiona Heenan 

SATURDAY EVENING  

6pm – Pete’s Pizza 

Mouth watering sourdough pizzas from €10  

7pm – Ceili with Grainne 

Led by one of Edwina Guckian’s many talented dance teachers 

8pm – Brían Farrell 

Local singer-songwriter Brían Farrell will perform a solo acoustic set featuring a mix of original material and classic cover songs 

10pm – DJ Cosmos 

Sunday 22nd May 2022 

SUNDAY MORNING 

10am – Local Club Rides 

Ballinamore Cycle Club will be leaving from Ballinamore at 9.45 on Sunday – all are welcome to join their cycle.

10am – Moran’s Bike Workshop 

Basic bike maintenance workshop with Tadhg 

11am – 99 Reasons to Cycle

The Leitrim Cycling Festival together with the Leitrim Branch of Down Syndrome will host a short cycle of just 1km to accommodate new and emerging cyclists with additional needs developing their skills on balance bikes, trikes and two wheelers. Participants supported by families and siblings to complete the route will  be welcomed over the finish line by a 99 ice-cream! If you have additional needs and love your bike/ wheels we might see you there!

12pm – Closing tea and cake

Explore the area by bike 

Explore the stunning surrounding countryside of Drumshanbo on two wheels! Choose from a variety of suggested rides of varying lengths all starting and ending in Drumshanbo. 

Trailblazers outdoor shop in Carrick-on-Shannon have put together a fantastic selection of routes on RouteYou.com for all levels. These are self-led rides so you choose the time of departure, the pace, the snack breaks and where and when to stop for photos of lovely Leitrim! 

Enjoy Drumshanbo town

Discover the many cafes, restaurants, and shops. Taste its renowned gin, boxty and bread. There are two grocery shops in Drumshanbo – Gala and Centra.

Human-on-a-bicycle library 

Ever wondered what it’s like to cycle with a toddler? Or to cycle across the world? Or how to cycle to work and not arrive in a pool of sweat? Or even how to find work in the world of cycling? Now is your chance to find out! 

Throughout the weekend coach/writer, Jo Sachs-Eldridge will be gathering humans with stories to share of their experiences of cycling – from the everyday to the wildest adventures. And you can ‘borrow’ these humans for 15 minutes to hear their real life stories and find out more about cycling in all its wonderful forms.
